The Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) is for people who are acutely unwell
The APU will accept referrals for people suffering from a recognised or probable acute episode of mental illness, which may include a Learning Disability, where there is evidence of actual or potential danger to self or others, or severe psychosocial dysfunction. Patients must be assessed as having intense mental health needs that require 24-hour medical care/supervision, which cannot be met in a less restrictive environment.
Autism Eileanan Siar is a local parent-led charity set up to support anyone living in the Western Isles who is affected by autism or additional support needs.
Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Founded in 1989 as the Eating Disorders Association, our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders.
Everyone needs other people, but not everyone has someone. For people who become isolated because of ill health, disability or social disadvantage, being matched with a Befriender often fills a big gap. The Blue Badge scheme operates throughout the UK and is administered by local authorities who process applications and issue badges.
The scheme is designed to enable people with severe mobility issues or who pose a risk to themselves or others in traffic to travel independently – as either a passenger or driver - by allowing them to park close to their destination.
The scheme gives concessions to badge holders when they park on-street. Badge holders may benefit from designated parking bays and other concessions when they park in off-street parking areas but this is not subject to the conditions of the scheme.
Bosom Buddies Breastfeeding Support Group
Bosom Buddies is a relaxed peer support group for breastfeeding mothers and mums-to-be to meet, support and share their breastfeeding experiences.
The group is run by the NHS Western Isles Health Visiting Team and there is access to a health visitor each week for support and advice. It is a very warm and friendly group and new mothers are always welcomed and encouraged to attend. The group provides a safe and relaxed environment to breastfeed in the company of others. Brook operates a number of sexual health and wellbeing services across the UK.
Brook is committed to supporting young people and the majority of services are for people under 25. However, in December 2019 we began running all-age sexual health services in parts of the country. We also provide outreach and education services for young people and training for professionals across the UK.

The Community Mental Health (CMH) team organises and coordinates your care if you receive community-based mental health care (i.e. care outside of hospital). Counselling is a way of dealing with difficulty. It is a positive response coming from the desire to cope more effectively. Counselling Services - CNES Recovery Support Worker
Crossroads Care Harris was set up in 1985 in response to a need to provide respite care in the home to carers of ill, elderly or people with disabilities. As well as providing respite for family carers, we also provide support to vulnerable people living alone. We provide a trained care attendant to go into the home to take over the duties of the family carer or to provide support if the user lives alone. We are affiliated to Crossroads (Scotland) and are registered with the Care Inspectorate.
Crossroads Lewis supports approximately 50 carers and service users on a weekly basis over all our services. We provide home support to carers regardless of age, disability or illness and to those living alone, struggling with ill-health or loneliness. We also provide a valued Palliative service at home.

We provide reliable, accurate and accessible information for people living with disability in Scotland. Our small and friendly team listen, understand and find the answers to individual queries on a whole range of topics from Blue Badges to Personal Independence Payments.

Health Promotion & Health Improvement Service
The Health Promotion & Health Improvement Service has a key role in enabling and empowering people, groups and communities to make informed choices about their lifestyle. Topics include: exercise, diet, alcohol, smoking, mental health, community, drugs, sexual health and workplace.
The Health Visiting team works in the community setting and visits parents or carers with new babies and young children under 5 years. A programme of standard visits is offered to all families. The aim of the service is to offer advice and support on many health and wellbeing topics including safeguarding.
Hebridean Men's Cancer Support Group
The Hebridean Men's Cancer Support Group provides support to men suffering from cancer in the Western Isles.

When you first find out you are pregnant you should contact a Midwife through your local Maternity Team for your first appointment. Your Maternity Team provides a range of services and information. This service will provide you with urgent care you'll be assessed for a range of concerns including cuts, burns, suspected broken bones, sprains and other injuries or illnesses. This may involve a telephone or video consultation with a clinician from your local health board or an appointment to attend A&E or Minor Injuries unit, avoiding a long wait in a hospital waiting room.

The Leanne Fund is the foremost Cystic Fibrosis charity working with individuals and families across the Highlands, Islands and Grampian regions of Scotland. We provide vital social, practical, emotional and financial assistance, supporting the whole family.
Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh (Uist and Barra Hospital) is located in Benbecula. It provides a local service for the population of the Southern Isles. The hospital provides care of the elderly and GP Acute and Midwifery led maternity services. Many of the Consultants from the Western Isles Hospital, and some from mainland Health Boards, visit the Uist and Barra Hospital to provide outpatient services.

Volunteer Centre Western Isles is an independent local charity with offices and staff in Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra.
We provide information, advice and support to individuals interested in volunteering, volunteer managers, voluntary groups, clubs and organisations, private and public sector organisations and companies.
