Venue: Raebhat House, Shawbost, Isle of Lewis | City: Shawbost, United Kingdom
Horshader Community Development
Shwapbost – The Shawbost Swap Shop
What is a Swap Shop?
It is a free and local exchange where members of the public can pass on things they no longer want, in exchange
for something they need. Many people describe it as a kind of cashless bring-and-buy sale or bring-and-take.
Other names are “give or take days”, “free for all”, “Freecycle days”. Participants do not need to bring anything
to take away goods, and vice versa.
Swap shops recognise that things no longer wanted by someone, might be another person’s treasure. By
reusing things we can cut down on the amount of waste that goes into landfill and reduce the amount of
resources that are used in manufacturing of new products. And it saves money!
In a small community, however, this can sometimes be a bit more awkward. We have a plan to make all items
anonymous.
Items which don’t shift in the Swap will be returned to donors, as we don’t have facilities or space to store or
dispose of unwanted items.
Where & when are we holding the Swap Shop?
Raebhat House, Saturday 4th November, between 10:00am and 2:00pm.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.
How will the Swap Shop work?
In advance, people in the Horshader and Shawbost areas can drop items off at Raebhat House. (All items
should be clean before dropping off.) We’ll record your details, and ticket each item, so we can return
unwanted items to you. The deadline for drop-offs is Wednesday 1st November.
On the day, the swap is open to people from the Horshader and Shawbost area to come along and take any
items they can use.
After the Swap, we’ll contact you to come and collect unwanted items from Raebhat House. All items must be
returned – we really don’t have the space or the means to dispose of them.
What is and isn’t suitable?
This is entirely up to you. Examples are: clothing, books, CDs, kitchenware, pictures, tools, gardening items,
curtains and other soft furnishings, children’s toys and baby items. We cannot accept items from commercial
sources – to avoid issues with commercial waste disposal. But:
- No paints, chemicals, or other hazardous materials.
- Nothing you couldn’t take home in a small van with minimal help.
- No electrical goods.
- No livestock, pets (or spouses).
Can I help?
We are looking for volunteers to help set up the Swap in the days leading up to it – ideally Thursday and Friday.
We’re also looking for volunteers on the day, to help run stalls, or serve tea and coffee.
What about money?
The idea is that items are swapped or given away – but anyone wanting to make cash donations can! All
proceeds will go to The British Heart Foundation.
